On this day in November 2009 — in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom, UN General Assembly declared 18 July “Nelson Mandela International Day”.

This resolution recognizes Nelson Mandela’s values and his dedication to the service of humankind in conflict resolution; race relations; promotion and stability of human rights; reconciliation; gender equality; the fight against poverty; the promotion of social justice.

“It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build.” — Nelson Mandela

Today as we celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day, I believe that it rests upon every individual to be moved and inspired to make a difference in our communities. I think that if everyone takes the responsibility to change the world for the better! we sure can do it.

Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to the duty of humanity: as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. In all our capacities, we can inspire and make the change that we want to see. We will not all be lawyer or presidents, but we have the ability and responsibility to make a positive difference.

The pandemic has done its share of harm on our ability to report and to function as a News Publication. However, somehow, someway, we did it, we are doing it. That in itself is a cause for celebration on a day like this. We believe in serving you with accurate news updates and keeping you informed every day. This is how we are making a difference in the beloved continent.

While staying optimistic is not easy for all of us right now, we know we will get through this. Ultimately, a new normal will be established, and the craziness of the pandemic will, slowly, go away. In the meantime, stay healthy.
